Lotion, Soap and Shampoo

Just a little reminder today. If you or your kids have food allergies make sure to read the ingredients on your lotions, soaps and shampoos. Many of the organic and natural products contain some of the top 8 food allergens!

Today for example, I was looking at the ingredients for Burt's Bee's Baby's Bee Fragrance Free Shampoo. It has sweet almond so we can't use it. It also has oats which for us is OK, but not OK for someone with a wheat allergy. So even though Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database gives a great safety rating we still can't use it. Also Our pediatrician gave us a lotion recommendation but didn't know it had almond in it. I will be sure to tell him at our next visit just so he knows.

Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database is a great site to see what in the skin and hair care products we use. You will be surprised by products that you think are natural and safe but aren't. Check out your sunscreens too, and you will be shocked!

Facebook Page

It has been suggested to me a number of times to create a Facebook page for No Nuts for My Peanut. Well I just did. I'm not sue what to do with it, but I'm sure I can figure it out lol. I do know I would like it to be a place where people can discuss, share and support people with food allergies. I welcome questions. If I don't know the answer maybe someone else will. Heck I still have SOOOOO much to learn. Yes peanuts are my main focus but I don't want to limit discussions to just nuts. Chime in, tell me you story. Lets learn from each other.

Found a Bakery!

Through word of mouth, my mom heard about a local bakery in my hometown that is peanut and tree nut free. I found this very hard to believe. Since it's Father's Day this weekend, I decided to call and see if it's true since I will be I town. Well it is! The Brightwaters Village Bakery is a safe place for my boy. He can go in a eat anything his little heart desires! I was so overjoyed at this, that I burst into tears right there on the phone. I tried to hide it but I could barely speak.

The woman I spoke with was telling me that the owners grandchildren have the allergy, and he wanted a safe place for them to go. She also told me that they have had kids come in there and cry because they could have anything and it was safe. Can you imagine being told no you can't eat that everywhere you go, especially all the desserts and sweets other kids get to eat. If I was overwhelmed, I can imagine how they must feel. We now have a special treat for our little guy. We can also get cakes, cookies, and pastries, for a party without having to worry. I know it sounds crazy, but something like this is a very big to to us.

They have customers from all over, not just Long Island NY. I wish they had a web page but since they don't, I'll post their contact info instead.

Everywhere you go.

It's seems that everywhere we go I meet another parent with a child that has a peanut allergy. It's amazing how many kids have this. With each person I meet I learn something new. I am truly grateful to these strangers who share their tricks with me. One thing they all say is that "it gets easier". Coming from them I am starting to believe it, and look forward to that day.

Well my sister in-law did a great job with her party. She made sure the snacks and food were safe and told me about anything that wasn't right away. My mother in-law also called to find out what Mac & Cheese Cormac could eat just in case. Needless to say we had a great time. We still watched him like a hawk but knowing that our family went out of their way for him was truly heat warming. Oh an my cupcakes came out ok. The kids seems to like them.

This week I do plan on tackling the topic of banning peanuts/nuts from airplanes. It's a hot topic that really makes my blood boil.

My Sister In-Law Rocks!

The baptism of my beautiful little niece is coming up so that means a party! Well my wonderful sister in-law called me today to check what chips and snacks Cormac can have. I was so excited and grateful. She wanted him to be safe, and I really can't explain how much that means to me. When ordering the food she even remembered to ask about nuts and peanut oil! Now we don't have to stress so much about this party. I am going to make cupcakes for all the kids so I know they will be safe too. We still have to watch him but can at least breath a little. Again I can't express my thanks to her. Thanks Maura!

Looks like I may need some baking lessons.

BBQ and Party Season!

In the past I have always looked forward to this time of year. Parties, especially outdoor parties with friends and family are always fun. This year we have a lot of learning and stressing to do. I've never held the role of food police before and it sucks. Sorry to be so blunt, but that's how I feel. I just want to scream that our child not eating your food, cakes and what not, is not a parenting choice! It's about keeping him safe and alive. That's right alive. I am not willing to take the risk of giving him something because you think we a re strict or being over protective. Do you really want an ambulance at you party taking a toddler to the ER? I don't get what is so hard to understand.

Now this isn't about anyone in particular. I'm just tired of explaining why, and it's only been a little over a month. Most people in our lives have been great. I even had a friend offer to read the ingredients of a cake over the phone to me without making me fell like I'm crazy. Well I feel crazy and not the good kind.
